It works fine in safe mode but I remain open to the possibility.
I remain unsure if it's a power issue via the USB bus. I'm also fairly sure there is nothing wrong with the drive itself or the formatting. Everything else is fine.Īt least I know I can do a Time Machine backup by restarting in safe mode. WD drive powered itself down after about ninety seconds. Re-connected all the peripherals and restarted in normal mode. The computer was started in safe mode and it recognised the drive immediately. All peripherals were unplugged bar the WD external drive.

OK, the situation so far All WD Utility and Security software has been uninstalled.
It has an independent power supply so much of the load is taken off the computer's port, and goes between the drive and the computer. It's a cheap fix if your have the spare ports. This plugs into TWO of your USB ports and the external drive to give it more power. Without replacing the drive there are two cost effective option to get more power the the Passport:

You must know your login password in order to log in. The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow. Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this.
